Jags fall 5-2 to Redhounds

Corbin beats North Laurel in baseball action

CORBIN—North Laurel decided to accept an offer to face Corbin after their scheduled game with Lawrence County was canceled, but the Jaguars could not turn their short road trip into a win as they were defeated 5-2 on Friday night.

“Our field was too wet to play,” North Laurel coach Darren McWhorter said. “We needed to play. We have the district tournament coming up and we have to work some kinks, out as you can see.”

The Jaguars (14-13) appeared to be on their way to a win as Nick Shannon was locating his curve ball and sending batters back to the dugout, but his defense fell asleep and committed seven errors to open the door for the Redhounds.

“Some of these things we are trying to work out are the things that will get you beat during the first round of the tournament,” McWhorter said. “A routine double play hit right toward the bag just pops right out of the glove. That’s a back breaker.”

Ryan Evans got the Jaguars offense started in the third inning after turning a single into a run with heads up base running. Tanner Smith gave the Jaguars a 2-0 advantage with a double over the centerfielder.

Shannon cruised through the first three innings with five strikeouts without allowing a hit, but after a few fielder’s errors, he was pulled during the fourth inning.

“Nick threw well early,” McWhorter said. “The fourth inning has bit us during the last few games. We have to find a way to get through the fourth inning.”

The Redhounds (17-11) took a huge bite out of the Jaguars during the fourth inning with five runs on three hits for the 5-2 lead. Tyler Edwards was a bright spot during the forgettable inning with a nice over the shoulder catch to take away a double.

“You have to make every routine play and someone has to step up and make a spectacular play somewhere to get a win.” McWhorter said. “Tyler made a nice play and that is what we are looking for.”

The Jags hosted Knott Co. Central on Saturday, and will host McCreary Central tonight and travel to Rockcastle Co. on Tuesday.
