Hospital OK with Medicare

Saint Joseph London in compliance with CMS

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Saint Joseph London will continue to accept payment from those carrying Health Insurance for the Aged and Disabled Program (Medicare), after a positive inspection by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) last week.

"Hospitals routinely undergo surveys by CMS.  It is part of the regulatory oversight for hospitals. Routine surveys are conducted at predetermined intervals as well as unannounced surveys in response to complaints or other issues," said Sharon Hershberger, public affairs director for Saint Joseph London.

CMS indicated that the main area of concern has been addressed.  On Aug. 27, CMS determined that the hospital was not in compliance with the Cod of Federal Regulations 482.23, title 42 Nursing Services.  The area of concern was regarded as an isolated emergent situation, where CMS conducted a survey and followed up with a specific patient that had a changing medical condition.

"Through ongoing efforts by the entire hospital staff, we continually offer quality care--as evidenced in our national quality rankings," Hershberger said.  "We appreciate the continued support by individuals in our community as we provide the best care for our friends, neighbors and loved ones."

Today, the hospital is in compliance with all certification requirements and they will continue to receive Medicare payments uninterrupted.  The CMS review was concluded on Friday, Sept. 7.

Saint Joseph London has been ranked among the top five percent in the nation among the 5,000 nonfederal hospitals that were included in a study by HealthGrades.  The hospital is also recognized as one of the top five hospitals in the state in Cardiology and Pulmonology and among the top 10 in Kentucky for Stroke care.
