McDonald’s employee arrested for copper theft

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — A McDonald’s employee was arrested by London Police officers on Saturday, July 7, for attempting to steal a copper cooler unit from an ice cream machine at its restaurant across from the Kroger store on North Main.

Shawn Ostering of Golden Eagle Drive in London was charged with third-degree burglary, third-degree criminal mischief, and possession of burglary tools.

According to a police report, early Saturday at approximately 1:24 a.m. officers received a call from an employee of the Kroger store on North Main Street about a suspicious vehicle driving behind the Kroger store without its lights on.

Before officers arrived at the store, however, they received another call stating the vehicle in question had left the Kroger parking lot and had driven across the street to McDonald’s and was still driving without its headlights on.

Officer Justin Roby arrived at McDonald’s and located the suspicious vehicle in the back parking lot of McDonald’s, but it was unoccupied. As other officers arrived, Ostering exited a storage building located in the rear parking area of McDonald’s. He was wearing a McDonald’s uniform and told police he was the maintenance man for all the local McDonald’s and was suppose to get a part from a bread machine to fix a broken machine at a different store.

Ostering explained to police he was attempting to get an early start on the repair so he would not have to get up so early.

Further investigation from officers showed Ostering’s tools were at a different machine than the bread machine and that he was attempting to remove a copper cooler unit from a ice cream machine.

After speaking with Ostering, officers learned that he left the store and drove to Kroger to wait on other employees to leave McDonald’s before he returned to remove the copper unit. Ostering stated he was going to sell the unit because of hard times and admitted to having a substance abuse problem.

The store manager was contacted who stated Ostering was the maintenance man for the McDonald’s but had no business in the storage building at that time of morning. Ostering is no longer employed by McDonald’s.

The investigation continues by Officer Roby.
