LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
Eddie Jones was sitting in church, waiting for mid-week Bible Study to begin when his friend, London City Fire Captain Tony Brown, got a call.
“You’ve got problems,” Brown told Jones.
Jones, the president of Chaney Lumber Company, left First Christian Church immediately to go to the business on south U.S. 25 where a fire was reported.
The noise and flashing lights of emergency vehicles greeted him as firefighters quickly extinguished the fire that began in the engine of a forklift.
“The sprinklers put the fire out and we had mostly smoke when we got here,” said Melva Pierce, spokesperson for the Lily Volunteer Fire Department.
Jones said the only damage known was to the one forklift and some smoke damage to the building where it was stored.
“We put all the equipment in this building at night so they won’t be in the weather,” Jones said.
Firefighters from Lily, Campground, Laurel County and West Knox departments assisted with the efforts. Also on hand were EMTs with Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County, the Department of Public Safety, and London-Laurel County Rescue Squad.
“The damage is limited to one forklift. An employee saw the fire and called it in. Of course, the fire departments were here within minutes,” Jones said. “We were very fortunate.”
