Investigation continues in Gilliam shooting

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Speculation abounds while law enforcement officials continue their investigation surrounding the shooting death of London attorney Larry Gilliam.

Gilliam was found lying on the floor of his office just before 3 p.m. Friday with a single gunshot wound to the chest. He was transported to Saint Joseph-London and pronounced dead by the Laurel County Coroner Doug Bowling within an hour of the shooting.

London City Police Chief Stewart Walker said the incident is still under investigation by the London-Laurel County Major Crimes Task Force, London City Police, and Laurel County Coroner’s office. No new information is being released to the public at this time.

Walker said Gilliam’s body had been sent to the State Medical Examiner’s office in Frankfort and no details surrounding the circumstances of his death were being released at this time. Walker said the autopsy report sometimes takes several days to complete and distribute to the appropriate agencies and persons and he hopes to have some new information by the end of the week.

Gilliam’s funeral was held Tuesday at Bowling Funeral Home with burial following in A.R. Dyche Memorial Cemetery.

Gilliam was a native of Harlan and worked as a mine safety inspector until he received an injury to his back. He graduated law school from Eastern Kentucky University and set up a law practice in London in 2002. He is survived by his wife Lisa, two children, three grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and a sister.
