Family fight ends with indictment

Father charged with shooting son-in-law

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — A Danville man was indicted by a Laurel grand jury on Friday for allegedly trying to kill his son-in-law.

William H. Mills, 58, is charged with attempted murder, first-degree assault, first-degree burglary, and first-degree criminal mischief in the four-count indictment returned on Friday.

Police were called to the scene of gunshots being fired at a residence on Littontown Road in the East Bernstadt area on August 12. There, they found 31-year-old William McDougall physically struggling with Mills while suffering from a gunshot wound.

The arrest report filed by Kentucky State Police Sgt. Steve Walker stated that Mills borrowed a shotgun, taped duct tape over his vehicle’s license plate to conceal the tag number, donned surgical gloves and went to McDougall’s home late that Saturday night. Once at the Littontown Road residence, Mills reportedly shot the lock off McDougall’s front door to enter the home, then went in and shot McDougall once.

Despite being shot, McDougall allegedly grabbed the shotgun from Mills and the two were still engaged in a physical altercation when police arrived at the scene. Mills was allegedly upset at McDougall over Mills’ daughter.

The shooting comprises the attempted murder and first-degree assault charges, while the forced entry into McDougall’s residence is the basis for the burglary charge. The criminal mischief charge stems from the damage done to the home that McDougall was renting and owned by another person.
