Murder suspect to face preliminary hearing

Held under a $250,000 cash bond

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — The man charged with the stabbing death of a Campbell Road man last week is scheduled for a preliminary hearing next week.

Hubert Dustin Lewis, 25, of the Benham community of Harlan County, is set to appear in Laurel District Court next Monday on the charge that he fatally stabbed 60-year-old Clinton Ray Howard on Dec. 12. His bond is set at $250,000 cash.

Lewis fled the Campbell Road residence before police arrived at the scene on Thursday night, but contacted the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office on Friday to turn himself in. He was picked up by Harlan County deputies and transported back to London by Laurel County Sheriff’s deputies on Friday afternoon. After questioning, Lewis was charged with murder.

During the questioning, Lewis disclosed the knife he used to stab Howard in the neck two times had been discarded during his flight. Acting on this information, Sheriff’s officials found the folding knife with an open blade approximately two miles from the murder scene.

Lewis’ girlfriend, Tiffany Jackson, called police after the stabbing which stemmed from an argument between Jackson, Lewis and Howard at Howard’s Campbell Road home. During the investigation of the stabbing incident, deputies contacted Laurel County Coroner Doug Bowling, who then pronounced Howard dead at the scene.
