LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
An East Bernstadt man was flown to the University of Kentucky Medical Center for treatment after accidentally shooting himself on Saturday.
Stephen Nolan II, 33, accidentally shot himself with a Glock 9mm pistol in the leg while at his mother, Sylvania Nolan’s residence on Blackwater Church Road at 2:59 p.m.
When Laurel County Sheriff’s Deputies Robbie Grimes and Josh Scott, along with the Department of Public Safety, arrived at the scene, they discovered Nolan in the living room, bleeding from the wound.
According to the sheriff’s report, Nolan loaded the gun at the residence. He did not know it had a live round in the chamber. He then pulled the trigger to disengage the firing pin and it discharged, striking him in the leg.
“The gun did not have a clip in it and I racked it, aimed it down…I was sitting, thought I was clear and the gun empty. I didn’t eject the shell, it had been hanging up because it had old S and M (Smith and Wesson) ammo,” Nolan said. “That’s why I was emptying it. I’m OK but it’s going to be a long recovery.”
Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County treated Nolan at the scene, and he was then airlifted by Air Methods to the UK Medical Center for further treatment.
Bush Volunteer Fire Department assisted at the scene.
“I would like to thank everyone who was there to help me. I wouldn’t have made it without their help,” Nolan said.
