LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
In what police are calling a freak accident, the county’s first traffic fatality of the year occurred on Pine Top Road on Tuesday night.
Brandon Bush, 30, of Taylor School Road in London, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, six miles west of London, after his Chevrolet S-10 pickup slammed into a tree on the driver’s side.
According to the press release from the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office, Bush was working on a vehicle at a friend’s home on Pine Top Road. The men got the vehicle running and Bush was driving the vehicle down a hill on a gravel road and lost control in a steep curve. The vehicle slid sideways and struck a tree at the driver’s side door, causing fatal injuries. Bush was pronounced dead at the scene by Laurel County Coroner Doug Bowling.
Swiss Colony Volunteer firefighters stopped traffic traveling down Pine Top Road so emergency workers could get access to the scene.
The accident was investigated by Senior Sgt. Greg Poynter, Deputy Greg Turner, and Deputy Josh Scott. Assisting at the scene were members of the London-Laurel County Rescue Squad, Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County and Swiss Colony Volunteer Fire Department.
Seventeen persons died in traffic fatalities during 2012, with the first being a motorcycle accident on Jan. 7. The number of fatal accidents last year was more than double those in 2011, with eight deaths that year.
