LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
The trial for a Laurel man accused of beating, stabbing, then shooting his grandmother in 2011 was continued last week in Laurel Circuit Court.
Jeremy Owens, 33, of Queen Road in Lily, remains incarcerated for the July 27 murder of his grandmother, 74-year-old Bernice Champlin. He is scheduled for a pretrial conference on Dec. 21.
Police were first called concerning a domestic dispute at 15 Queen Road around 4:45 p.m. that Wednesday afternoon. While Laurel County Sheriff’s Deputy Milton Storm and Deputy Shawn Boroviak were en route to the scene, they received the call that a shooting had taken place at the residence.
Upon arrival at the residence, Josh Owens, the grandson of Bernice Champlin, said his brother had shot their grandmother, was still inside the residence and was still armed. As deputies kept a cautious distance from the home, Sheriff John Root obtained a cell phone number and called the alleged shooter, Jeremy Owens. After talking for five to 10 minutes, Owens agreed to surrender to police and was taken into custody.
Inside the home, the elderly woman laid in the hallway. Although she had been assaulted, stabbed and then shot, it was the gunshot that ended her life. A pistol and a knife were recovered from the scene.
Commonwealth’s Attorney Jackie Steele could not be reached for comment on the continuation of the case.
