LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
A Laurel County Correctional Center inmate, who fled Thursday morning while on garbage detail, was captured about three hours later.
The Correctional Center was conducting a garbage pickup work detail on Dan Westerfield Road in southern Laurel County around 10:30 a.m. when inmate Dale E. Valentine, 32, of 117 West Carter Road, Apt. No. 13, in London, walked away. There was one supervising officer and three inmates on the work detail at the time.
Local law enforcement officials were immediately notified of the escape. At approximately 1:30 p.m., law enforcement officials were tipped off that the inmate was possibly located at a residence on Robinson Creek Road in Laurel County. Law enforcement officials immediately responded and Valentine was located hiding in the yard behind the residence. He was taken into custody without incident by Laurel County Correctional Officers, Laurel and Knox County Sheriff’s deputies and troopers from the Kentucky State Police, and returned to jail.
Cpt. Marty Robinson said Valentine was serving 14 days for DUI, possession of drug paraphernalia, failure to or improper signal, no registration receipt and rear license not illuminated. He had four days left of his sentence and would have gotten out Monday (today).
Robinson said Valentine is now also charged with escape. He is also charged with burglary stemming from the escape, because he broke into a barn and stole a change of clothes.
“He ditched his jumpsuit,” Robinson said.
Valentine will have to serve additional time, but that will be up to a judge, Robinson continued.
The investigation continues by the Laurel County Correctional Center.
