Common grackles the most sighted in GBBC

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — The Great Backyard Bird Count went off without a hitch last month.

There were 35 participants and 48 species of birds sighted in Laurel County alone. Compared to last year, that is almost double in participants and more than twice the species this year, said local coordinator Wendi Allen.

The most unusual (least sighted) bird was the hooded merganser ducks on a pond in London.

“We also were able to see some of the mergansers and report on the Christmas Bird Count, so evidently they have found a pond that they really like,” Allen said.

As of the March 1 turn-in date, there were a total of 123 species seen in the state of Kentucky with 10,000 common grackles, 7,500 European starlings and 1,500 American robins being the most sighted in number.

“Thank God for the American robin,” Allen said.

The GBBC is a project of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the Audubon Society.
