Gilliam trial starts Monday

London attorney’s wife accused of murder

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Twenty months after his death, the wife of the late London attorney Larry Gilliam will go to trial, accused of fatally shooting him.

Lisa Gilliam is charged with the murder of her husband on Jan. 7, 2011. The Gilliams were alone in Larry Gilliam’s law office on East Fourth Street that Friday afternoon when Larry Gilliam was shot in the chest. He was pronounced dead at Saint Joseph London by the Laurel County Coroner within an hour after the shooting incident took place.

Lisa Gilliam’s trial is expected to last up to four days, with jury selection beginning on Monday morning. After the jury is selected, the prosecution and the defense attorneys will give their opening statements and the trial will begin as numerous witnesses will testify before Special Judge Robert McGinnis.

McGinnis was appointed to preside over the case since both circuit judges were familiar with Larry Gilliam as well as with Lisa Gilliam, who once worked with the probation and parole office.

Lisa Gilliam has always maintained her husband committed suicide; however, a Laurel grand jury heard evidence concerning the case in March 2011 and returned an indictment against Gilliam for murder.

Three days later, Gilliam turned herself in to the London Police Department and was released after posting a $100,000 cash bond.

Gilliam is represented by Somerset attorneys, Scott Foster and Robert Norfleet. The prosecuting attorney in this case is Commonwealth’s Attorney Jackie Steele.
