Mom who traded baby for truck gets bond reduction

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Her first pretrial hearing in Laurel Circuit Court resulted in a bond reduction for a Florida woman accused of trading her baby for a pickup.

Heather Ann Kaminsky, 32, was indicted last month after law enforcement officials learned she had traded her infant son to a south Laurel couple in exchange for a truck.

Kaminsky’s bond was originally set at $50,000 cash but was reduced to $10,000 cash or $20,000 property during a pretrial hearing on Friday. A condition of that bond is Kaminsky remain under home incarceration.

Kaminsky is charged with sell/purchase a child for adoption and unlawful possession of a meth precursor. She is being represented by Conrad Cessna of Storm Law Office in London.

The situation came to light in early July when the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office was notified Kaminsky had allegedly given her baby to a south Laurel couple for a 1999 Chevrolet pickup. Kaminsky then sold the truck for $800 and a quantity of methamphetamine, according to sheriff’s officials.

The investigation led them to the current owner of the truck, then back to the couple who had taken Kaminsky’s baby since it was released from the hospital after birth. The couple had cared for the child since that time.

The couple — Jeremy and Jamiee Brown — were arrested on July 12 and charged with human trafficking with a victim under 18 years of age. That charge was revised to sell/purchase a child for adoption when the case was sent to a Laurel grand jury. However, no indictment was returned against the Browns, and the case is dismissed.

Kaminsky remained on the lam for more than a week but was apprehended in Putnam County, Fla., on July 18. The 32-year-old mother of three reportedly left Florida in early January when she was nine months pregnant and came to Kentucky to avoid losing her unborn child to the custody of the Florida social services, which had already taken her two older children.

Kaminsky was charged with human trafficking with a victim under 18 years of age, but that charge — like the one against the Browns — was revised to selling or purchasing a child for adoption because human trafficking charges usually applies more so in cases when a child is sold for sexual favors. Both charges are Class C felonies and carries a five to 10 year prison sentence.
