Man arrested in Monticello shooting case

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — At approximately 3 a.m. Monday, Kentucky State Troopers at Post 11 responded to a 911 call from Wayne County concerning a shooting on Hwy. 1275 North, approximately 50 miles east of London.

KSP Det. Billy Correll arrived at the scene and determined that Gavin A. Thompson, 38, of Monticello, had been shot by Ian T. Miller, 21, of Elmira, N.Y.

According to Tpr. Lloyd Cochran, public affairs officer at Post 11, an altercation had taken place at Thompson’s residence shortly before the shooting.

Thompson was transported to the Wayne County Hospital and pronounced dead by Wayne County Coroner Forrest Hicks and Deputy Coroner Anthony Vaughn by 4:55 a.m. An autopsy was performed Monday at the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort.

Based on autopsy findings, foul play was suspected regarding Thompson’s death. A warrant was obtained for Miller and he was arrested, charged with murder, and lodged in the Wayne County Detention Center. Det. Correll is continuing the investigation.

Det. Correll was assisted at the scene by Tpr. Adam Childress and Tpr. Wendell Higginbotham, as well as officials from the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, the Monticello Police Department and Wayne County EMS.
