LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office and Laurel County Fairgrounds’ officials are seeking the whereabouts of two vandals who did extensive damage to the buildings and their contents. A cash reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest.
The second break-in occurred last Saturday and the first one about a week and a half ago, said Jimmy Durham, secretary/treasurer of the Laurel County Park & Fairgrounds Board.
During the first incident, the concession stand and the skirt around the stage were damaged. The windows of the stand were broken out, the air conditioner was hacked, and the inside contents were broken, including an ice machine.
The agriculture building was the target of the more recent incident. The vandals broke the door lock, broke the picture window out, damaged one tractor, and tried to drive another one through the building causing damage to it, and destroyed signs and ballfield lighting.
Durham said he estimated the damage to be between $8,000 and $10,000. He said there is insurance on the buildings, but not the contents.
“But I’m going to change that,” he said.
Durham and Denver Jones, fairgrounds president, said they believe the suspects to be two young men on one 4-wheeler, because there are only one set of tracks. Although the fairgrounds is fenced in, there is a gate at the back and the vandals broke the chain on it. Durham said he was going to remove the gate and replace it with fencing. The 4-wheelers came in from a power line access road from Conley Road. They didn’t steal anything, just did a lot of damage, Durham said.
Durham said he played at the fairgrounds extensively when he was a child and didn’t know what he would have done if it had not been there.
“We were trying to fix up the fairgrounds with a new sign and work on the fields. Now, this is going to set us back.”
