LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
Doug Bennett will take on the position of Laurel County Public School District Superintendent starting July 1, 2012, as Interim Superintendent Ronald “Sonny” Fentress returns to retirement.
Bennett, his wife and three children will relocate to Laurel County from Whitley County where he served as director of instructor for the Whitley County Board of Education.
“In the field of education, I have had the opportunity to build my experience from the ground up,” he said.
Bennett has spent 20 years in the Whitley County School District serving as a high school wrestling coach, Advanced Placement Spanish and English teacher, and as a guidance counselor and principal of Whitley North Elementary. Currently, he is completing his doctorate degree in educational leadership at the University of the Cumberlands. He has a master’s degree from Eastern Kentucky University and Union College.
“More than any of that, I share a commitment to ensure that Laurel County students receive the best educational services possible, bar none,” he said.
Through his leadership within Laurel County Schools, Bennett said he hopes that not only his children, but all Laurel County students will receive a high quality of education that can assure a successful future in their career of choice.
Since the announcement of his anticipated employment, he has faithfully been present at every Laurel County Board of Education meeting. Intently he has listened to board member decisions and jotted down notes, all the while bearing a kind smile to all staff and visitors.
“I am impressed with the staff, parents and community members that I have met so far. It is the people that are Laurel County’s greatest resource; this community reflects a high degree of care and pride,” he said.
Although, Bennett said, due to education’s ever-changing climate, there is always room for improvement. For one, he will pursue the unification of all schools within the district to share a common vision and passion.
“To make a positive impact on generations of students and families,” he said.
In fact, he is confident the current high school drop-out rate of nearly three percent can be reduced with provisions of realistic options for post-high school success. The board’s recent 5-0 vote for the purchase of property for a vocational/technical school is only the beginning of this vision that Bennett desires to move onward.
“I believe the people of Laurel County, their value and work ethic are what I like best about Laurel County,” he said.
As superintendent, Bennett vowed to put the interests of the school district ahead of his own, serving the public with a clear vision of progress.
