6-year-old airlifted to UK Medical Center after Ky. 80 crash

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Two children were injured Monday in a two-vehicle crash on west Ky. 80.

A 6-year-old boy was flown to the University of Kentucky Medical Center. He was reported to be in serious condition.

His 9-year-old sister was taken to Saint Joseph London for treatment of injuries.

At 8 a.m. on Monday morning, a 2001 Chevy Tahoe, driven by Stephanie Winberry of London, was traveling across Ky. 80 when she collided with a tractor trailer heading west.

Investigating Officer Steven Douglas, with the Kentucky State Police-Vehicle Enforcement, said Winberry was attempting cross the intersection of Ky. 80 and Ky. 1535, also known as Sinking Creek Road, when she hit a 1996 Peterbuilt tractor trailer, driven by 50-year-old William G. Rice of Van Lear, Ky. The trailer was packed with lumber.

Rice was uninjured.

Ky. 80 was shut down for approximately two hours while first responders worked the scene.

Douglas stated a glare from the eastern rising sun was a possible factor in the accident.  Neither alcohol nor drugs were suspected.

The two children were passengers in Winberry's SUV. Douglas said the 6-year-old boy was likely not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

The tractor trailer received moderate damage and was towed from the scene.

Assisting on the scene was CV Officer Duffy Sutton, Kentucky State Police Troopers Lloyd Cochran, Brandon Creekmore and Trooper First Class Don Trosper.  Also assisting was Swiss Colony Volunteer Fire Department, and the London-Laurel County Rescue Squad.

Officer Douglas is continuing the investigation.
