LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
Bad checks written to various businesses in the area led to the arrest of a London woman on Monday.
Joetta Benge, 40, of Greenmount Bound Road in London was arrested by Laurel County Sheriff’s Detective/U.S. Marshal Warrant Task Force Officer Jason Back around 1:30 p.m.
Benge had four warrants for theft by deception in which she allegedly wrote bad checks. One of the checks was more than $9,000. The checks had been written to area businesses including the Knox County Clerk and were in the amounts of $493.23, $387.50, $2,100, $9,339.80, and $19.38.
Benge was lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center following her arrest. She is scheduled to appear in Laurel District Court today, Wednesday. Her bond is set at $700 on one charge, $2,500 on another charge, and $10,000 on a third charge. All bonds are set for cash.
While the warrants were being served on Benge, a man in the house when officers arrived was also placed under arrest for withholding information about Benge’s whereabouts.
John B. Davis, 34, of Hickory Road in London, was charged with second-degree hindering prosecution or apprehension. Davis allegedly answered the door when officers arrived at the residence, and told deputies Benge was not home. However, Deputy Josh Scott had already spotted Benge through a window, observing her trying to hide under a desk.
