LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
Kentucky State Police officials have launched an investigation into Dr. Jackie Maxey at the request of the Laurel County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.
Detective Mark Allen said he has received complaints from two of Maxey’s female patients. Commonwealth’s Attorney Jackie Steele has received five complaints from female patients since Friday, he said.
The purpose of the investigation is to look into those complaints. Both Steele and Allen declined to comment on their nature.
When The Sentinel-Echo called Maxey’s office to request comment, a receptionist at the office declined on Maxey’s behalf.
On March 4, an emergency order of restriction was filed by the Commonwealth of Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure against Maxey after information surfaced that the family practice doctor was performing an unusually large number of pelvic exams and Pap smears. Several patients also complained he had an unusual way of performing the examinations. The order of restriction is in place pending the board’s evidentiary hearing, which is set for Aug. 10 to 13.
Allen said he could not say exactly how long his investigation will take.
“I would say it will be a long one,” he said.
Steele said he has read the emergency order of restriction and had no comment.
“I think the complaint pretty much speaks for itself,” he said.
In the meantime, Maxey continues to practice medicine — the order of restriction does not prevent him from doing so. He is required to have a chaperone present when performing pelvic, breast, vaginal, rectal, Pap and other sensitive examinations. He is also prohibited from being in the presence of a fully or partially disrobed female patient unless a chaperone is in the room.
Maxey told an investigator with the Commonwealth of Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure his mother died of pelvic cancer at the age of 58 and that it is his passion to diagnose gynecological cancer.
