LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
The London-Laurel County Chamber of Commerce recognized leaders in business and industry, as well as three deserving educators, at their annual banquet on Tuesday night.
The Chamber of Commerce presents awards to one individual and one business for their selfless volunteerism throughout the past year. This year’s recipient for “Volunteer of the Year” was Kristina McQueen of The Job Shop. McQueen is also a member of the Chamber’s Ambassador Club. McQueen was not present to accept her award.
The Business Volunteer of the Year award was presented to Michael Sliter of Hotwire Productions.net. Sliter is a Chamber Ambassador and joined the Chamber board of directors in January.
Outgoing board of directors Don Holt of Windstream Communications, Don Schaefer of Jackson Energy and Virginia Dempsey of Saint Joseph London were honored for their dedication to the Chamber. Dempsey was not present to accept her award.
Incoming board of directors are Lisa Baker of Jackson Energy, Donnie Cox of Christian Sturgeon & Associates and Sliter.
The annual banquet also honors outstanding teachers at the elementary, middle and high school level.
Connie Shepherd of Wyan-Pine Grove Elementary was named as the Elementary Teacher of the Year.
Joey McKnight of North Laurel Middle School was named as the Middle School Teacher of the Year.
Chastity White of South Laurel High School was named as the High School Teacher of the Year. Unable to attend Tuesday’s Chamber banquet, White asked students, Tanner Sibert and Jessica Bowman (center, left to right), to accept her award on her behalf.
Bowman and Sibert are peer tutors in White’s class.
All three Teachers of the Year received a $1,000 award from Cumberland Healthcare Inc. and will be featured in the Wednesday edition of The Sentinel-Echo.
The annual Chamber banquet was held at the London Community Center. The entertainment was provided by Comedian Marc Klien, and the meal was provided by Treasure Bites.
The ceremony also included a silent auction featuring more than 70 items donated by local businesses and individuals and serves as an additional fundraiser for the Chamber.
