LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
During the World Chicken Festival, the London Police Department made several drug-related arrests, many involving juveniles, and responded to a single vehicle accident.
On Thursday, officers discovered several male juveniles loitering in a parking lot adjacent to East Fourth Street after festival hours. Officers approached them, saying the festival was closed and they needed to vacate the premises.
Through investigation, officers found various tobacco products in the juveniles' possession. Officer Jacob Bormann cited Quentin Widner, 18, of Clark Drive in London, for possession of a pipe in which he had previously used to smoke marijuana. Other juveniles who were with Widner were released to their parents.
On Friday, London Police Chief Stewart Walker and Major Derek House received a complaint of a suspicious male and female in the alleyway behind The Sentinel-Echo and Bob's Ready To Wear.
Walker and House approached the two and ordered them to show personal identification. The male subject quickly turned and fled the alley, as the officers followed in chase toward the festival area on Broad Street. Sgt. Danny Robinson and Officer Justin Hopkins assisted in the foot pursuit and shortly apprehended the subject next to the Festival's Main Stage.
Officers discovered two syringes in the front pocket of the male, one of the which contained a liquid substance called Suboxone. Suboxone is used illegally when crushed or shot up as a liquid, but is medically used to help wean patients off of hydrocodone.
The juvenile subject was detained and charged with second-degree fleeing and evading police, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance and resisting arrest.
Late Friday evening, officers responded to a single vehicle accident on East Fourth Street. Sgt. Randy Medlock investigated the scene where he found Brandon M. Rush and Taylor Thomas, both of 335 Laurel Church Road in London, in need of serious medical attention.
Rush was driving a 2002 Ford Mustang, traveling east on Fourth Street when he lost control of the vehicle, struck a ditch on the right side of the roadway, brought the vehicle back onto the roadway and struck a culvert in front of 20/20 Eye Care. As he struck the culvert, the vehicle flipped multiple times, ejecting Rush.
Thomas was extricated form the vehicle by the London-Laurel County Rescue Squad. Both were transported to Saint Joseph London for multiple injuries while Thomas was transported to the University of Kentucky Medical Center for further evaluation. Rush was cited in court for operating on a suspended operator's license.
On Saturday, a group of five were observed entering an abandoned residence at the corner of Sixth and Mill streets, just south of Mill Street Park. Officers responded to the residence and located the juveniles inside the home, smoking marijuana. All five were taken to the London Police Department and each were cited for possession of marijuana and released to their parents.
Also arrested Saturday night was Michael Tkachik, 19, of 172 Cheek Turner Road in London, for driving a motorcycle under the influence. Chief Stewart Walker observed Tkachik speeding along the festival route.
Tkachik was reportedly borrowed the motorcycle from a friend. Roby arrested Tkachik for driving a motorcycle with no motorcycle operator's license, failure to produce an insurance card, reckless driving and operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol.
He was placed under a $2,500 surety bond.
