Fight leads to injury of neighbor

Meth makers, brothers face preliminary hearing next week

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — The pungent odor of meth cooking resulted in a fight between two East Bernstadt brothers and their neighbors Sunday night.

Jeffrey T. McGhee, 48, and 37-year-old Tab McGhee are now scheduled for a preliminary hearing in Laurel District Court next week on charges of manufacturing methamphetamine and assault.

According to the  Laurel County Sheriff’s Office, two neighbors of the McGhees smelled the meth and came to the residence on north U.S. 25 to complain about the illegal action taking place so closely to their home. The four men allegedly began fighting, with Tab McGhee striking one of the men in the back of the head with a large aluminum flashlight. Jeffrey McGhee then jumped into the truck of one of the neighbor men and tried to run over him. The arrest report filed by Detective Jason Back states the only reason Jeffrey McGhee did not run over the second victim was because the man who had been hit in the head with the flashlight was in the way.

When the fight broke up and police were called to the scene, Tab McGhee allegedly ran from the scene with the active one-step meth lab, which was later found by officers assisting at the scene. Also discovered near the meth lab was identification and other personal items belonging to Tab McGhee.

Assisting at the scene were Deputies Greg Turner, Steve Hoskins, Kirk Mays, Josh Scott, and James Sizemore.

Both McGhees were lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center. Jeffrey McGhee is held under a $50,000 cash bond and his brother Tab is under a $25,000 cash bond.
