LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
Linda Vinson of the Elgin Foundation presented the 2012-2013 report on improved reading skills of students in grades K-3 to the Board of Education Monday. Vinson said the district has a great chance of bringing 90 percent of students up to reading on grade level by the end of the next nine weeks of school.
So far, K-3 students received an 8 percent gain, reaching 64 percent of students now reading on grade level.
Elgin's pursuit of reaching students who struggle in reading reaches far across nine school districts. Forty-five schools are participating in the initiative, including Laurel County.
"In reading across our district, nearly every school, every grade level, is at or above that grade level overall, and we are making gains," said Tharon Hurley, director of Assessment and Accountability of the Laurel County Schools. "We are making lots of progress, our kids are learning and we are very pleased."
Three more Laurel County teachers were recognized for becoming National Board Certified on Monday. There are currently 27 board certified teachers in the district.
Superintendent Doug Bennett also recognized all five board members with tokens of their service.
"As a superintendent and a father, I can say that our district is fortunate to have such a thoughtful, dedicated Board of Education. These members are committed to doing what is best for our students and the board members are key players as we work to move every child to proficiency in learning skills," Bennett said.
Board members include Chairman Ed Jones, Jeff Lewis, Tommy Smith, Joe Schenkenfelder, and Charles "Bud" Stuber.
