Taran Johnson was named to the MSC volleyball first team all conference.

WILLIAMSBURG—The University of the Cumberlands volleyball team competed against Georgetown College in the semi-final round of Mid-South Conference Tournament. Although the Patriots were defeated, several individuals were recognized and awarded with MSC honors.

Senior Taran Johnson, who played at South Laurel, was the lone member of the Patriots’ volleyball team to be named on the First Team All-Conference. This past season Johnson has accomplished a lot as an individual. She tallied 224 kills, 731 total attacks as well as 146 blocks. Johnson has broken all of the blocking records, including the solo block record, assisted block record, and the total block record. The new records stand at 351 solo blocks, 324 assisted blocks, and 675 total blocks.

Earning honorable mention for the Patriots was junior Kaylyn Suttles and senior Lauren Taylor. Suttles tallied her 1,500th career dig this past season and is only the third Patriot to reach this individual record. Taylor also reached an individual milestone; she reached her 1,000th career kill against Pikeville College in the first round of the MSC Tournament. Taylor is just the fifth Patriot volleyball player to accomplish this landmark.

Sophomore Amanda Hensley was awarded the Champion of Character Award. This annual award is given to the student-athlete that demonstrates academic achievement, campus leadership, community leadership, and embraces the five core character values of the initiative, athletic achievement and future ambition. This season, Hensley earned 245 kills and 161 digs. Hensley was also named to the MSC Academic All-Conference team.

Other Patriots earning the MSC Academic All-Conference honor were sophomore Tessie Rice, sophomore Kendra Sammans, and sophomore Tommie Thompson. To be named to the Academic All Mid-South Conference team an individual must be of sophomore standing or above and maintain at least a 3.25 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
