Taran Johnson is the new blocks leader at the University of the Cumberlands.

WILLIAMSBURG—University of the Cumberlands volleyball senior Taran Johnson has accomplished an outstanding feat that many athletes never accomplish. In this her final year in a Lady Patriot uniform, Johnson has assured her name will be permanently etched in the record books.

In her final week of regular season play, Johnson, who attended South Laurel High School, has broken all blocking records for the university. Claiming the assisted block record and the total block record on Nov. 4 against Pikeville College and then the solo block record on Nov. 6 against Milligan College, Johnson’s block statistics now stand at 351 solo blocks, 324 assisted blocks, and 675 total blocks.

“I am so proud to see our senior captain accomplish such a great feat,” said coach Kara Clemenz. “Taran has really worked hard since her freshman year to accomplish these blocking milestones. I am excited to see records that were set while I was playing being broken. It is a real testament to the growth of the program."

Johnson was recognized on Saturday when the Patriots hosted the opening round of the Mid-South Conference (MSC) Tournament against Pikeville College. The Patriot ladies defeated the Lady Bears 3-1.

The Lady Patriot volleyball team played yesterday in the second round of the MSC conference tournament against Georgetown College at the Frankfort Civic Center.
