Morgan Johnson puts the tag on a Southwestern runner at first base.

South Laurel took advantage of a key Southwestern error, and some good pitching from Emily Gaines and Porsha Justice, to down the visiting Warriors 5-2 Tuesday.

“I’m very pleased with our pitching tonight,” Coach Kaye Smith said as her team improved to 2-0. “We’ve been using both Emily and Porsha, and so far it has worked out for us.”

Gaines started the game, going four innings, allowing one run on one hit while striking out seven batters. Justice came in and pitched the final three innings, allowing one run on three hits and fanned five.

It was a Southwestern error in the bottom of the third that allowed South Laurel to two runs to take a 3-1 lead.

With the game tied 1-1 and two outs, Justice grounded to third, but the throw by McDaniel was over the first baseman’s head, which allowed Jamie Wyatt and Lauren Wombles to score to make it 3-1. Wombles had driven in Gaines earlier in the inning for South’s first run.

The Cards added another run in the bottom of the fourth as Candace Kirby doubled past third and later scored on a single by Gaines.

South had a chance to really add to its lead in the fifth when they loaded the bases with one out on consecutive singles by Wombles, Justice and Ashley Stock. But Shelby Kosmecki, who came in to relieve starter Sarah Hranicky, fanned Kirby and Vanessa Arthur to get Southwestern out of the jam.

“We still need to work on hitting with runners in scoring position,” Smith said.

The Cards scored in the sixth when Morgan Johnson reached on another error, stole second, and scored on a passed ball to make it 5-1. The Warriors scored their second run in the top of the seventh when Jasi Flynn doubled and scored on a single by Mikkah Tarter to make the final 5-2. Southwestern’s first run came in the second as Flynn tripled and scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Jessica Starnes.

South Laurel will now travel to Florida over Spring Break to play four games in the Sunshine State. Smith said playing the games isn’t as important as using this trip as a team-builder.

“Sometimes you get caught up in the games, and you forget to have fun,” Smith said. “This is a relaxing time for both the players and their families.”
