It was toe-tapping, hand clapping entertainment that also brought roars of laughter from the crowd as the 5th Annual Pickin’ for the Kids fundraiser was held at the Laurel-London Optimist Club last weekend.
A dozen bluegrass groups performed during the two-day event that offered a variety of music and entertainment to raise money for the annual Needy Family Christmas Program sponsored by the Optimist Club. Each December children and their families are treated to a Christmas party that provides food, clothing and gifts to low-income families in the Laurel community.
Friday night’s program kicked off with the Laurel Mountain Boys, followed by Good Ground and Clear Fork. Laurel River Line wound down the show.
Saturday’s agenda offered Custom Made Bluegrass at 11 a.m., with the Dean Osborne Band making their first appearance of the weekend at noon. The Moron Brothers brought their down-home humor and harmonies to the stage afterwards and followed the Dean Osborne Band once again during the evening program.
The Letterbox Boys, Wilderness Road, Straight Creek and Kentucky Mountain Trio wound down the afternoon entertainment, with Custom Made Bluegrass performing their second set at 5:30 p.m.
Tidal Wave Road performed after the Dean Osborne Band and Moron Brothers, with Laurel River Line again closing the show on Saturday.
T-shirts, concessions and a variety of raffles were also available during the weekend events — all proceeds of which are contributed to the Christmas program.
Another upcoming fundraiser for the Christmas program is the annual horse show, which is set for Saturday, Aug. 18.
