Robert Charles Deaton

A Corbin man accused of slashing his wife of less than two months with a kitchen knife after he found an old flower card, has been indicted by a Laurel County Grand Jury.

The indictment accuses Robert Charles Deaton, 29, of one count of first-degree assault, tampering with physical evidence and first-degree persistent felony offender.

Laurel County Sheriff’s Detective Charles Loomis said Deaton struck and kicked Brittany Deaton with his hands and feet before dragging her by her hair and leg from the bedroom to the kitchen of the couple’s home on Acorn Drive.

“Once in the kitchen, Mr. Deaton proceeded to pick up a large kitchen knife and cut Mrs. Deaton underneath the chin with it,” Sheriff Fred Yaden said. “He (Deaton) then used the knife to slice his wife’s ankle, resulting in a long, deep, serious wound.”

Brittany Deaton told investigators Robert Deaton cleaned the knife handle before order her to pick up the knife in an attempt to put her fingerprints on the knife.

At his arraignment Friday in Laurel Circuit Court., Deaton pleaded not guilty to the charges. Judge John Knox Mills ordered Deaton’s bond remain $50,000 cash. In addition, Deaton was ordered not to have any contact with his wife or her family.
