London Police are investigating an incident in which an accused murderer reportedly tried to take her own life at the Laurel County Detention Center.
Amanda Vaughn was found by another inmate Sunday hanging by the neck from the top bunk in her cell. Vaughn is being held in the detention center while awaiting trial for allegedly robbing and beating her grandfather, Tommy Taylor, to death.
According to London Police Chief Elijah Hollon, Vaughn was locked in her cell alone about 4:15 p.m., when another inmate, who was in the nearby day room, heard a gagging noise coming from the cell. When the inmate looked through the window of the cell, she reportedly saw Vaughn and notified jail personnel, who entered the cell and lowered Vaughn to the ground.
Vaughn was taken to Marymount Medical Center and then flown to the University of Kentucky Medical Center were she is listed in serious but stable condition.
London Police Detective Sgt. Russell Baker is investigating the incident, but police said foul play is not suspected.
Vaughn and her co-defendant Jason Wayne Wilson, who were indicted on murder and robbery charges in June 2006, are scheduled to go to trial Jan. 7 in Laurel Circuit Court.
