A canning factory has announced plans to set up shop in Laurel County, generating at least 363 new jobs.

During its regular meeting this week, the London-Laurel County Industrial Development Authority approved a decision by Truitt Brothers, Inc. to open operations.

Industrial Development Executive Director Dennis Karr said the facility is to be housed in one of the existing buildings in Laurel County, though he could not release the exact location.

Officials estimate the project’s total cost at $19.02 million. Wages for the new jobs are expected to average between $10.76 and $18 per hour.

Karr also announced that another company in Laurel County is looking to expand and is set to locate the expansion in a speculation building in the Industrial Park, off of west KY 80. Again, Karr was not at liberty to disclose this company, which is reportedly working in with another unnamed company out of Wisconsin on the expansion.

Karr said the companies may purchase the spec building for about $2 million, though the final paperwork has yet to be signed.

If the deal goes through, Karr said the money will likely be used to build another spec building to attract additional industry to the area.

The Industrial Authority has refurbished the former Therm-O-Disc/Microdevices building on Old Whitley Road to increase its appeal to potential occupants.
