Harold Kemper, owner of Kemper Home Furnishings, said expanding to Somerset “made a lot of sense.”

Shoppers will soon have another choice of locations to shop for furniture.

After having a store in London for years, Kemper Home Furnishings felt the obvious expansion site was Somerset and soon will open a local store.

“We have a lot of family members who have moved to Somerset,” said Harold Kemper, owner of Kemper Home Furnishings, “and it’s just a great opportunity with the proximity of the London store. It made a lot of sense if we were going to expand, to expand to Somerset.”

Kemper purchased property off  U.S. 27 in Somerset in April and construction is currently under way with over a 25,000-square-foot showroom space expected to open in December.

However, the workings of Kemper Home Furnishings began years ago when Kemper received a vision after his father, Harold Kemper Sr., opened a small television repair shop in 1963, just outside of Hyden, which sparked a dream in the younger Kemper to be in the business as well.

In 1975 Kemper joined the family business and then 22 years later in 1997, Kemper and his wife, Debra, moved their family to London, where they began growing his new business — Kemper Home Furnishings — and, as he explained, developed a customer base through their service and quality products.

Then in 1999, the Kempers purchased their current property and location in London on U.S. Hwy. 25 S. (South Laurel Road), where they have over 27,000 square feet of showrooms and an on-site warehouse large enough to ensure ample stock so they can have quick delivery to a customer’s home, on their products.

Kemper Home Furnish-ings offers a wide variety of bedding and accessories, including Lay-Z-Boy Comfort Studio, an England Custom Comfort Center, a Youth Gallery, Serta mattresses and a couple of other brands that are exclusive to the store.

“We deliver most sales within two to three days,” said Kemper. “We’ve got a huge stock.”

Kemper noted most special order products should be in the customer’s home within 30 days.

Presently, Kemper said he looks for the store to be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; however, they are looking into having extended hours a couple days a week.

“We’re going to have to see what our customers needs are and make the hours fit their needs,” Kemper said.

The Somerset store is located at 1755 U.S. 27 South between lights 12 and 13.

Kemper said he expects the store to open in December and a grand opening to be held in January.

And his hope is that they can do their part in the community, in bringing good quality products and service, as well as being part of the community.

“We want to give people a good shopping experience and amazing customer service,” said Kemper.

Along with Kemper and his wife, Debra, all three of his children are involved in the business, as his son Kenny is president, daughter Rebecca is vice president of marketing and daughter Keisha is vice president controller.

“With three Kemper grandkids, at present,” said Kemper, “Kemper is sure to be a continuing legacy to its original founders, Harold Sr. and Edna Kemper.”

He noted his son-in-law, Michael Jones, will be managing the Somerset location and they are currently hiring positions at this time. They expect to have a total of eight to 10 employees at the store and if anyone is interested in applying, he said, they should e-mail

“We just want to be a good place to work, shop and be as active as we can be in the community,” Kemper said.
