New Salem Baptist Church held Run for Haiti 5K at Corbin High School's track Friday evening to fund a mission trip to Haiti. This is the first 5K run event the church has held, coordinated by Wendell Patterson, frequent runner and member of the church.

"We had 52 runners and walkers, everyone seemed to have a really good time," said Patterson. There was also a Kid's Fun Run side-event. After expenses, the church raised around $1,000.

"I would like to thank all the volunteers who helped out with the event. It wouldn't have been possible without them," said Patterson.

New Salem Baptist Church will be going on its fourth trip to Haiti at a later date. During the trip, church members will conduct ministry and provide necessities residents of the country.

"We have a very special place in our hearts for the people we minister in Haiti," said Greg Deaton, pastor at New Salem Baptist Church. "It's a life-changing event when anyone goes. You get to see a nation who loves the Lord and makes do with what little they have. They minister to us just as we're ministering to them."

Including Pastor Deaton, each trip over the years consists of around a dozen people from local churches. Deaton said that during one trip his church was able to feed lunch to a whole school.

Anyone can help fund the mission trip by donating to New Salem Baptist Church. Those who are interested in participating can contact pastor Deaton at (606) 309-8719. New Salem Baptist Church is located on 2182 North Laurel Road in London.
