Four students were called before the Laurel County School Board Monday night. Instead of disciplinary problems, the four members of the class of 2009 — Denver Brown, Jonathan Fryman, Jennifer Hicks and Brandon Farris — were recognized for perfect or near-perfect attendance during their school careers.

Shelly Wyatt, with the community education program, said Brown missed 5 1/2 days since the third grade and had perfect attendance through middle and high school. Brown attended Johnson Elementary School, North Laurel Middle School and North Laurel High School,

Fryman, who attended London Elementary, South Laurel Middle School and South Laurel High School, missed 11 1/2 days in 13 years of school.

“That is less than one absence per year,” Wyatt said.

While at Johnson Elementary, Hicks missed 6 1/2 days, but had perfect attendance while at North Laurel Middle School and missed .34 days while at North Laurel High School.

“She missed that time because she lost her grandma,” Director of Pupil Personnel Doug Phelps said. “That is about as top character as you can get.”

Farris was recognized for perfect attendance while going to Hazel Green Elementary School, North Middle School and North High School.

In February of his senior year, Phelps said Farris’ perfect attendance was in jeopardy because Farris had been involved in a car wreck on the way to school and had been taken to the hospital with three missing teeth.

Phelps said he was able to have Farris enrolled in the homebound program that day to keep the streak alive.

“These are the kinds of recognition we always enjoy,” Chairwoman Lola Owens Reed said. “Hats off to all of you young people.”
