A London woman allegedly told store officials that she hid about $200 worth of merchandise under her baby’s blanket in the bottom of her shopping cart because she wanted to have things everyone else.

Casie L. Torres, 20, was arrested June 3 on charges of theft by unlawful taking of less than $300 and endangering the welfare of a minor after loss prevention associates at Walmart watched her hide the items in the bottom of her cart and try to leave the store without paying for them.

The store employees said they followed Torres around the store as she selected the 16 items. After watching Torres make a small purchase and leave the store, the associates took Torres to the office where they recovered the merchandise and held her until London Police arrived.

London Police Sgt. Matt Moore said Torres’ child was placed in the custody of her mother, who was at the store but was not involved in the shoplifting.

According to store officials, the items Torres tried to take included a pair of shoes, a shower curtain, clothes, underwear and rugs, with a total value of $198.56.

Torres pleaded not guilty to the charges Monday in Laurel District Court. She will return to court Aug. 18 for trial. She posted bond and was released from the Laurel County Detention Center.
