Joshua and Ethan Gray were the first to enjoy the water at the splash pad at Mill Street Park. The splash pad will be open daily through Labor Day.

With today marking the traditional start of summer, the splash pad at Mill Street Park and the pool at Levi Jackson Wilderness Road State Park are open for business.

London Public Works employees turned on the water to the splash pad Friday afternoon and within a few minutes, Joshua and Ethan Gray were running around, soaking up the sun and the water.

“They were so hoping it would be open today,” the boys’ mom, Shelly, said as she watched them from a nearby bench.

London Public Works Director Steve Edge said the splash pad will remain open 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. daily through Labor Day.

A black button on a green post starts the water, which Edge said cycles for about 15 minutes before stopping.

“Anybody is welcome to come down and get cooled off,” Edge said.

Because of drain issues, park workers got a late start on filling the pool at Levi Jackson State Park. However, officials said Friday, the pool is being filled and should be ready for swimmers this week.

The pool, which includes water slides, is open daily from noon until 7:30 p.m.
