Coach James Burns celebrates with his team after winning the Minor League girls title.

A strong pitcher performance by Hagan Burns led South London Red to an 8-1 win over Burnside and a trip to the state tournament.

“Hagan pitched really well,” said coach and father James Burns. “She didn’t give up a hit in the 13 innings she pitched in this tournament, and only gave up one run.”

Burnside battled its way through the loser’s bracket to face South London Red Sunday evening for the right to advance to the state tournament, which will start Saturday in Russell Springs. Burnside loaded the bases in the first inning with one out, but Burns struck out the next two batters she faced to get out of the inning.

South then answered with six runs in the bottom of the inning to take control of the game.

“We put the pressure on them, and that’s what we wanted to do,” Burns said.

Tori Bell led things off for South with a single, followed by a walk by Meagan Bryant. Burns then singled to center, and the ball got by the Burnside player, which allowed Bell and Bryant to score and Burns to end up at third. Erin Campbell then singled in Burns to make it 3-0. Brittany Vandeventer was brought in as a courtesy runner for Campbell.

Jenna Carney then grounded out to first, but the throw to second in an attempt to get Vandeventer got away, allowing the South runner to advance to third. Katlyn Shepherd then reached on an error which allowed Vandeventer to score.

Madyson Morris walked and Makenzie Mills doubled to score Morris. Mills would also score for the 6-0 lead.

South added one run in the second and another in the fourth, while Burnside’s lone run came in the top of the sixth.

Now, Burns must prepare his team for the state tournament.

“We got a tough draw,” Burns said. “We are in the draw with the team from the Louisville area and Russell-Flatwoods. But our girls played well, and we worked them hard in practice, and they never complained. Their performance showed in this tournament.”
