Dear Editor:

Many of you may have seen the movie “300” that portrays the historical epic of King Leonidas of Sparta and his brave men defending the mountain pass at Thermopylae against a massive Persian Army focused on conquering Greece.

As we know from history, the Spartans’ bravery and ferocity could not prevent their inevitable defeat against overwhelming odds, but it did send the intended message to their Greek allies to rally to the cause before all hope was lost.

U.S. Sen. Jim Bunning may not have faced a massive Persian Horde, but he took a stand this last week that was indeed truly Spartan.

Just like his Ancient Greek counterpart King Leonidas, he made a stand against an overwhelming majority of liberal “tax and spend” Democrat senators, but more importantly, he sent a much needed message to his Republican allies — “Stand with me before our country implodes under the weight of our massive national debt!”

But where were his Republican allies in the U.S. Senate as the liberal news media and National Democrat Party relentlessly attacked him? Many Republican senators pleaded with him to just get out of the way, that he was hurting the Republicans chances of winning a majority in the U.S. Senate this November.

What kind of majority would that be? A majority of spineless cowards afraid they won’t get re-elected for doing what is right?

At least two of the leading candidates to replace Bunning, Dr. Rand Paul and Trey Grayson, spoke in strong support of his moral stand on fiscal responsibility.

Paul even went so far to ask his supporters to turn out en masse to counter-protest operatives of liberal Democrat candidates Dan Mongiardo and Jack Conway, who made plans to turn out to attack Bunning’s brave stand at his Lexington office last Tuesday.

Now, the Democrats, with the help of traitorous Republicans, have crushed Bunning’s opposition to our nation’s out-of-control spending.

However, like the Spartans of Ancient Greece, did the actions of this tenacious old senator from Kentucky inspire others to take action or will it have been a futile effort against the inevitable fall of our country?

For once let us hope that history does repeat itself, and those that believe in personal responsibility and common sense will stand up for what is right.

Please call and write your congressmen and U.S. senators. Tell them to save our country and the futures of our children and grandchildren.
