Scotty Farthing (behind) and David Herron combine to strip the ball from Lincoln Co.'s Cameron Smith.

Two goals in a span of less than 30 seconds broke open a 1-0 game and lifted the South Laurel Cardinals to a 5-0 win over Lincoln Co. Thursday in boys’ soccer action.

“We were snakebit in the first half,” coach Harmon Hodge said, as his team had 11 shots on goal, but could convert on only one, a beautiful shot by Dustin Herron in the second minute off an assist from Dylan Berry. “We hit the post three times, and had several others just miss.”

Jeffrey Poston had a shot in the 17th minute clang off the post, while Jonathan McClure’s shot in the 37th minute also found the frame.

Things started to pick up in the second half, with goals from McClure and Herron in the 46th minute upped the lead to 3-0.

The first came when Berry sent a long ball that Herron ran onto. His shot was saved by the keeper, who couldn’t hold onto the ball. McClure was there to collect the loose ball and touch it into the net.

Seconds later, Berry again sent a long ball that Herron collect and blasted a shot into the upper right corner to make it 3-0.

Tanner Chaney added a goal in the 67th minute, and Poston finished things off in the 70th minute on a nice give-and-go from Herron to make the final, 5-0.

“We’re doing much better with our passing,” Hodge said. “We worked the ball better, when we wanted to. Fortunately, I have several players this year who can score, so if teams want to key on Jeffrey (Poston), that’s fine. We’ve got other’s who can score.”

Hodge was also pleased with his team’s defensive play, as keeper Tyler Huff recorded another clean sheet. South Laurel has allowed only one goal in five games this season.

“I preach that we depend on everybody to play,” Hodge said. “It’s nice to have some depth this year. Everybody has matured and stepped up, and I’m really pleased.”

South Laurel will travel to take on Corbin Tuesday in a big district match-up.
