Seth Morgan returns a shot during a recent South Laurel match.

South Laurel swept its pair of tennis matches against visiting Bell County Thursday evening.

Both the boys and girls won by scores of 9-0. The win improves the boys to 6-1 on the season and the girls to 5-2.

“To be a relatively young team, our guys did a great job of staying focused after getting some big leads,” Coach Aaron Smallwood said. “I can’t complain about their play tonight.”

Blake Walden downed Mack Miracle, 8-0 to get things off on the right foot for the Cardinals. This match also saw the return of senior Babar Niazi, who had missed the first three weeks of the season with a knee injury. His return was a success, beating Matt Elliott, 8-1.

“It was nice to see Babar win his first match since coming back from a knee problem,” Smallwood said. “Hopefully he can continue to play well and make an immediate impact for us.”

The team of Dustin Herron and Robbie Fiefhaus, playing their first time at No. 1, beat Miracle/Chris Partin, 8-1. “They played very well and it looks like they’ll be staying there for a while. We’ve tried a few different combinations at number one—hopefully this will stick,” Smallwood said.

The Lady Cardinals also had an easy time, beating Bell Co. 9-0.

“This was probably our best team effort of the season,” Smallwood said. “Up until tonight, we’ve had one or two girls play below their abilities—they all played well tonight. All our singles players and doubles teams got out to early leads and did not let up. This is very encouraging for the final couple weeks of the season and for the upcoming regional tournament.”

In fact, South Laurel only gave up six games in girls’ singles action, and three in girls’ doubles. Lyndsay Collette, Brianna Smith, Emily Abner, Adriana Turner, Blair Walden and Katie Kilburn all won in singles.
