WILLIAMSBURG — The North Laurel 11-year-old All-Stars found an easy 15-0 win over Harlan in Saturday’s first round of the District 4 tournament.
North Laurel Coach Kyle Elza said his team had a slow start on Saturday but once North Laurel got going, they couldn’t be stopped by the Harlan County 11-year-old All-Stars.
“We kind of started out slow, I think a little nervous at first,” he said. “They really didn’t get started until the second inning and everyone got on (the base) or got a hit.”
Two North Laurel pitchers, Bradyn Evans and Zak Johnston, combined to throw a no-hitter against Harlan over three innings, while a big second inning started off by a single by Jude McWhorter sealed the win for North Laurel.
North Laurel was able to string together 15 runs off 10 hits in the second inning.
McWhorter, Evans, Cam Hinkle and Dylan Hurley contributed two hits each for North Laurel.
“I was proud of them,” Elza said. “This is the same group I’ve coached for the last three years. We’re just trying to go game by game and go one game at a time.”
Elza believes that in order for his team to continue advancing throughout the district tournament, North Laurel will have to start strong every single game and finish just as strong.
