Quarterback Blake Sanders looks to throw the ball as teammate Devon Pennington blocks.

With their 28-12 win over Meece Middle on Saturday, the South Middle Cardinals improved to 11-0 on the season, but more importantly, advanced to the conference title game.

“This team is a lot like a family,” Coach Russel Jones said. “They like each other, and they play together so well. They really get along with each other, on and off the field.”

Blake Sanders had a big game against Meece, as he scored the first touchdown on a big run. The game was tied 6-6 at the half.

The second half belonged to the Cardinals, as Sanders scored on a 70 yard kickoff return. He also hit Austin Rader with a screen pass for a 50 yard score. South’s final touchdown came when Jessie Thomas recovered a fumble in the end zone. Devon Pennington and Rader both scored two-point conversions.

South will now play for the championship either Thursday or Saturday at Meece Middle against the winner of Saturday’s second game between Corbin and Clay Co.

The team is coached by Jones, Ryan Flynn, Tyler Faulkner and Rod Barnard.
