Ty Proffitt had 21, but South Laurel was outgunned against Marietta (Ga.) Wheeler on Saturday, 83-63.

LEXINGTON — South Laurel succumbed to the star power of J.J. Hickson and Marietta (Ga.) Wheeler, falling 83-63 Saturday in the Nissan On Nicholasville Shootout at Lexington Catholic.

Hickson, ranked as the No. 3 power forward in the country by, continued his dominant tour of Kentucky, compiling 27 points and 11 rebounds against the Cardinals. The night before, the 6-8, 230-pound Hickson, who is bound for N.C. State, grabbed 17 boards and poured in 34 points in a win over LexCath.

Wheeler’s size and athleticism proved too potent a combo for South Laurel to handle, as the Wildcats stormed out to a 19-6 lead and never let the Cardinals get closer than 10 the rest of the way.

Ty Proffitt scored 21 to lead South Laurel, while Jordan Hammonds had 13 and Trey Smith added 11 points and seven rebounds.

Adrian Williams had 14 points and nine assists for Wheeler, and hit four three-pointers.

South Laurel (10-5) faced Whitley County on Tuesday in a game too late for this edition of the Sentinel-Echo. The Cardinals host Madison Central next Tuesday.
